It seems to have rather a lot.
My advice after very extensive testing of 1.5.3 and 1.5.4 on various browsers on a PC is:

1. Turn off 'Enable Flash Uploader' and 'Restrict Uploads' in Global Configuration.
2. Make sure you CHMOD 777 your /tmp directory.

Firefox is known to have problems, but mine didn't work in IE either.

When I finally got an error message I could read, and changed permission on my /tmp directory, things improved considerably. I still get an error message (with Flash Uploader turned off) but it DOES upload the image. If I turn Flash Uploader back on, I can upload without error messages.

But I can still not create a new folder.

I have submitted this as a bug to joomla, because there are so many forum threads about it since 1.5.x came out and no real fixes.

If anything else useful turns up, I will report back.

Anyone else got useful clues?

Hi Dex

Could this be one of those situations where if you have entered FTP credential into the Admin back end prior , it works - I can't remember having any probs with Media Manager and creating new folders, except that I stumbled the first time, but found it worked after I had carried out a change else where (eg global config change or installed a new component) I'd entered the site FTP credentials.

... just a thought;)
Piece of cake !... probably.

OK, and a good thought. I will try.
Must admit, I feel squeamish about putting all my eggs in one basket by giving hackers my FTP details, but I will hide the configuration.php outside public html and try it.
Thx

And another thought...does entering your FTP details prevent the problem when installing components of them being created by the web services user, so if the permissions are wrong on created files, you cant go in by FTP and change them (as you are not the owner)??

[someone say 'yes' and make me very happy!]

Yes

and, BTW, you only enter the FTP credentials when you are logged in to the backend - I also wouldn't be happy about putting them into the config file on the site, even hidden... call me paranoid, but
Piece of cake !... probably.

Right...but that stores the FTP details in configuration.php, yeah? Or what have I missed here?

Yes it does store the FTP details in the config file. It does encrypt them so you don't just SEE them if you got access to the config file but still.

If you get a server that has local user SU (suPHP, i think) then you don't have to worry about the whole permissions thing with installing components or errors with the media manager.

You would have thought so, but no... it only keeps the credentils for the admin session. Once you log out, they are gone....
Piece of cake !... probably.

FTP details are encrypted in configuration.php? OK. well its a start.
And thx will research suPHP - it could solve a LOT of headaches (OK migraines!) on some hosts.

I dont know where to put in FTP details such that they are only stored for the session. Can you enlighten me please? tx

Hey Dex,

I was wrong. It's not encrypted. I'm not sure why I thought it was.
