It's not an extension, but could easily be setup in a custom module.

I've had a lot of success with Skype as you can share your desktop or view your clients - res is low but you still get the job done.

You can setup on your Joomla site an icon that shows if you are online and allows your clients to click on it to contact you

Wow, that's a good idea. For me. Altho I tried it once and it didnt work out, doubtless it got better since then.

However, my client needs a proper Live Support window that looks professional, so I'm running with option (a) for that case.

OK I installed LiveZilla and the Joomla module for it. It took a coupla hours to fully set up and document - it needs its own DB and there are also security issues to deal with. And a fair amount of configuration.

Anyhow, on first inspection it does look very good. Once it's set up, it looks pretty simple to run.
