I have a local sports club site that I maintain and in the last few weeks I am getting a few new "members" each day registering but they all look bogus. I am assuming that they are hoping there is a user forum or guestbook where they can post links to their sites.

I have a captcha module installed where you have to put the text in to complete the registration. Can deciphering the text and putting it in correctly be done automatically or is someone physically having to put it in?

I am not sure why this particular site is getting all the attention as I look after another site that is getting none.

I just delete the users but it is getting a little annoying.

Cheers,

John

Can you PM me your site link? I never faced this issue before. Or try to put stronger captcha.

How many registration you are getting everyday?

tetigers.com.au

I have had 2 today and it is at least that amount but sometimes more. It has been going on for a few weeks and is just a pain more than anything. Most are using gmail but I have seen common email address like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (just an example, not actual).

Cheers,

JL

Hi John.

Looks like your site has local appeal. You can afford to ban a range of IP addresses to exclude Russia, if that's where the stuff is coming from.

Do this in your control panel.

Try this tool to identify where the IP addresses come from: en.utrace.de/widget.php
On the way to being a basic Joomla user.

Hi JL

Try to disable auto activation of registration or block IP's as suggested by Laurie

If I look at one of the url's, it orginates from the Netherlands. The IP is: 84.243.196.139. What range should I block out? All from 84.xxx.xxx.xxx?

Can't do much about the gmail accounts though.....

Block whole ip range so anybody coming from that country will not be able to access the site.

IP range blocking seems a little drastic but it is for a local community so it is an option.

I suggest using this:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-.../authentication/7361

best replacement for the joomla registration i've come across.
