If you create a website and even though most of it is Joomla you do have copyright over anything you create eg text, photos and artwork. If you do not have a contract with your client then the copyright stays with you. See www.copyright.org.au/find-an-answer/browse-by-a-z/ then go down to W and read Websites & copyright.

My question is - do you have a contract with your client that sets out the ownership of copyrighted material?

I just handover rights to material that has been paid for. I could be wrong to do this, but it seems fair to me.

I find that a lot of client like the idea of owning their website and in our early days we had to adopt the approach of copyright hand over to put our clients at ease.

Some were working with other agencies that held full copyright to everything and when relationships turned the client could loose everything.

IP Australia also set out a lot of information regarding IP as well.
