There was some discussion at the Sydney Joomla User Group conference of the dream of having a unified alerting process for when Joomla extension updates are available.

If I read the recent post from the Google Webmaster blog correctly, they are moving to do just this for us - provided that the extension developers include the meta tags for version numbers.
