Hi all

Someone out there knows the best way to do this... I hope Do share...

I have a site with a linked image on the home page. I know from Google how many people are exiting the site from the home page, but not how many are exiting by clicking on this particular image.

Can someone please suggest the best way to measure this?

Google site overlays dont seem to work and I cant find anything else in Google to give me this info. I'm reluctant to put in a Joomla stats add-on, as this seems like overkill in performance drag just to find out this one statistic.

Thanks

Actually, I've had a small idea myself... perhaps I could link the image to a dummy internal page, that does a transparent redirect to the external link. Then I could measure exits from the dummy internal page.

Complication factor is that the home page is www.mydomain.com and the image is linked to other.mydomain.com. So does Google even recognise this as a site exit?
So many questions... as you can tell, I dont mix it with Google analytics much....

Anyway, any other offers?

thx

OK, for some reason I could not get Google site overlays to work (I tested them on this site - nothing!) but on the client site, they DO work, so that's the solution we're using.

For anyone who does not know - in Google Analytics, as a site owner you can apply a whole bunch of site stats-harvesting/reporting widgets to your site, and there's a button called 'Site Overlay' in the Google Analytics toolkit which clicks you on to your site and (apparently - I have yet to see it in action!) when you hover over any page element e.g. an image button, a popup shows the stats for that element. Handy.

All you need to do is tag your image as an outgoing link. It's pretty easy to do. Check out this article from Google, it has the snippets you need.

Cheers,

No Worries. I also use pretty much the same thing for tagging my inbound links. Especially useful for newsletters etc using Google's URL Builder. That way you can track things by campaign, source, keyword etc etc.
