I have bought another 3rd party template for a client and am attempting to edit it. The site is: mousiesbarra.com.au/index.php

What I am wanting to do it to change the header and the background to put a different feel to it so I have a few - might be silly questions...

1. The header - why so many images contained to make up the whole header? There are 3 so far I have identified. The logo on the left, the background in the middle and the bit on the far right. I am sure there are more. Why not just have 1 image? This is a standard from what I have seen in Joomla templates but make it hard to edit (for me).

2. Firebug - if I use it and go to the header I can see it is contained in:
<div id="wrapper">
<div id="mainbody">
<div class="shad-1">
<div class="shad-2">
<div class="shad-3">
<div id="header">
</div>
</div>

If I edit the "header" tag (take it out) the whole header goes. That would make sense to me if the header were one image but it is not. Can someone explain this?

I would just like to have one header image and remove the menu items.

3. More firebug - how do I know where the information is contained within the back end? What I mean is that I might hover over a portion (say the "Hot Deals") I cna see the <div class="moduletable"> but if i wanted to edit this permanently, where does FB telling me where I can find it?

4. Why don't template providers supply the image placements or is there some little funky way to do this? There are quite a few that make up a template but to be able to find them and edit them is very time consuming. Any tips here?

Thanks for any help you can give,

Cheers,

JL

Hello - there are a lot of questions here - maybe next time break them up.

But in a nutshell - div means area (division) - if you remove a div (like header) you will remove that area including the areas and images within it. Take another peak using firebug and you will see all the divs inside the header div. Click on the plus button to open - the button is in FB next to the <div='''etc - that is if there are elements within it.

So, for example in your template, there is another div (area) within the header div - called logo - the logo image is in it. While you find it difficult to change the entire header many people my only want to change eth logo image - so it makes sense to separate the images in this respect - but ultimately - if you want to make a lot of changes you do have to know the language a little (html / css) and perhaps even some php.

Many commercial templates will come with some instructions for how to change the ogo and basics - this looks like a rockettheme template and they usually have documentation and forums. And usually someone has already had the same problem as you.

I agree though that by providing so many options (to please teh masses) there can be more complexity in customising etc.

WRT to the menu – can you not unpublish the menu from that position?

Images – if you right click on an image you can view image and this will show you the path to the image

if you click on an element – the right hand side of firebug screen will show you where the styling code is.

However, in the case of mods and stuff some styling may be within the module itself and you may have to do an override etc.

So when you click on hotdeals the div then view at bottom – you can click the plsu sign next to module table to see more and the styling will be on the right

Ps: Your template is looking a little crazy – but Im assuming that's because you are working on it.

Phew, so glad that Audra answered all those questions so well!

John also asked about why the header image often comes in three parts - in my limited experience this is to allow the template to cope with different widths and even flexible widths.

Quite true - Good Comment - particularly when the images are background corners and shading etc.

Which one of the problems that these templates pose. It you look at the side of the main content, I have managed to colour some of it brown. Some of it has stayed the original black. I need to find the file that is the black or the colour code.

Yes the site is a bit all over the place as I am trying to get it right....
