TOPIC: How can I speed up this page?

How can I speed up this page? 1 year, 9 months ago #3058

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering why the Sobi2 VC page takes so long to load (over 10 or 12 seconds): ARTS.org.au Sobi2 VC page.

I think it must be the database calls, as my home page is much larger (in terms of CSS, etc.) and only takes 6 seconds max.

Is there any way of speeding this up. I would like to have many more entries on this page, but it just becomes way too slow. I've tested it with a much larger number of entries and it times out...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sobi RC 2.9.0.2
Joomla! 1.5.15
Database Version: 4.1.22-standard
Database Collation: utf8_general_ci
PHP Version: 5.2.6
Web Server: Apache/1.3.41 (Unix)

Cheers,

Nic

Hi Nic

Not too bad - 6.88 seconds for me. I'd be surprised if you got the page to run a whole lot quicker, although optimisation IS possible.

I used firebug to look at what you are loading - there's a lot of javascript in there - 6 files at 76k.

Your logo image is 288k, could be smaller?
Also you've got 368k of images (49 images), which seems excessive when i see the images actually displayed. You could use image sprites to reduce that in the template.

You have 11 CSS files loading at 58k

I would suggest you compress your javascript and css files in to 1 file each. There are extensions to do this for you. Which I could hunt up, if you are interested.

All those should help.

Also I see mod_superfish is the one that's so heavy on the Javascript - so you might wish to use a lighter weight menu!

Ans poss you could look at a faster more lightweight template like rocket theme's afterburner, which has the menu already on board.

When you compress the Javascript and CSS files, it speeds up load times since you can only load two files simultaneously from your domain - so the system is waiting to load 2 before it can start loading another. Based on this, you may also want to push your images to a different (sub)domain.

Hi Dex,

Thank you for having a look!

I didn't notice my logo was so heavy!

I tried taking out the Superfish menu, but it made little difference. The Sobi2 devs suggested it may be the SQL version. Any recommendations for a new host?

I'll try compiling the CSS into one file when I get some time... I'm very interested in the extensions you mention though. So, yes, please tell me what they are!

I'll be updating the software also, and testing again.

Having a look at Afterburner now... Thanks for the tip!

Cheers,

Nic

Hey Nic

Yep, well let us know how you go....

I rarely go past Rochenhost.com myself - they host the joomla.org family of sites, so how far wrong can you go?

extensions.joomla.org/search?q=compress+css

Thanks Dex!

I tried the first CSS compressor in that list, but it didn't make any noticable difference, so perhaps the problem is more the host.

I'll give Rochenhost a go...
