Did this ever work? Might be installation problem.
Have you moved the site at all? Can you ftp in and check that the images folder is there?
Got a url?

no i haven't moved the site... i thought if the button on the articles page was showing , that the image manager would be automatically ready to work!!
i'm now looking at the JCE image manager ... seems to be a popular one ... ??

JCE certainly is a good editor, altho not the fastest. If you install it, you will get a new image editor button that will almost certainly work. Otherwise you've probably got your image folder set wrongly in some parameter somehwere e.g. the editor plugin

Sounds like you're using Joomla 1.5.13.

There was a problem with the media manager. I can't remember what exactly but one of the files was screwed up.

Downgrade your media manager component to version 1.5.12 or upgrade to Joomla 1.5.14. I think the fix was rolled out in that. I can't remember as I had to do the manual fix.
The only limitation is your imagination
