After the fallout from K2 developers' decision not to upgrade K2 to J1.6 (blog.joomlaworks.gr/why-were-not-porting...o-joomla-16-the-life) and Joomla's own take on their rollout/upgrades (community.joomla.org/blogs/leadership/13...-and-the-future.html) and this opinion poll on upgrading to 1.6 (community.getk2.org/#pollFor16
), I wondered...

What will YOU be doing about upgrading to 1.6?

thanks for bringing this up Dex.
I had been planning to upgrade my sites to J 1.6 over the next few months - however, it really seems to me know that there is no hurry in upgrading.
My only hope is that upgrading to J 1.7 and later versions will be a lot easier and less disruptive than upgrading from 1.5 to 1.6 seems to be!

What do the rest of you think?

Actually the K2 developers changed thier mind after a poll

Did someone say publicity stunt?

Joomla 1.6 to 1.7 won't have as many changes so upgrading should be smoother. This is because 1.6 had over 2 1/2 years of development, whereas 1.7 will only have a few months due to the new 6 month release cycle.

If all the extensions you need are 1.6 ready and you need some of the new functionality such as ACL then you should upgrade.

If the extensions you use are not ready, or you are happy with your current site's functionality then don't bother upgrading yet as 1.5 will still be supported for quite a while yet. That doesn't mean you can't start playing with 1.6 and learning about the new stuff.

Tim

Yes I may have been playing devil's advocate there, but we do have a different decision to make based on the new Joomla release strategy.

Your summary is quite concise.

Since this was such a HOT topic over the weekend, I bit the bullet and wrote two articles (sorry, they aren't short).

I thought it was interesting that about a third of the respondents on the K2 poll where interested in where the 1.6 version was going. At this early stage after release I find that much better than anticipated. If that's indicative of the community as a whole, that is an extremely compelling argument to developers to support it (1.6). Also, lots of opportunity for "repositioning" in the market because of 1.6 and I'm sure a few people out there have already realised that. The early birds will most certainly catch the best worms.

The jump to 1.7, as Tim says, shouldn't be huge (I think it will be very modest indeed). We saw with 1.5 it took 6 months for the market to pick up steam which means that by the time 1.7 comes along, there should be a good spread of extensions available. In other words, while there is a bit of a jump from 1.5 to 1.6 (what do you expect after 3 years), the effort to convert to 1.6 is going to last you through until maybe even 1.8. That's a good ROI.

As for my own sites, learn.theartofjoomla.com needs the 1.6 ACL so that's what it's running, but none of my other sites need to upgrade ... yet.

When Joomla 1.5 was released, my upgrade decision was purely based on the availability of the extensions I used on a site.

Quite frankly, nothing has changed!

I couldn't wait for Joomla 1.6 for the ACL and decided to run with K2 as opposed to an ACL extension. Whilst there are flaws as yet, I am so impressed with the power of K2 that its development is central to my upgrades now.

The recent articles on K2 and its upgrade path have been very interesting. Now that they are moving to 1.6, it looks like I will too eventually.
Now Retired but still interested...
