I'm wondering what's the word on migrating to the new version of Joomla. Anybody tried it?

I followed the instructions fairly well using JUpgrade.

Found the categories to be like a dog's breakfast. I've spent a lot of time straightening that out a bit but some things defy me. The articles had lost their alias' but all the articles in a category got it back when I saved one article (I think). All very confusing.

There's more, but my head will explode if I try to explain it.

I can't get the mod_rewrite to work. I changed the old .htaccess file to htaccess-old.txt and changed the new one to .htaccess. The directions didn't mention this but it must be needed. When I click mod_rewrite Yes and save, it reverts to No.

Anyway, I can afford to loose the site and start over, so I think I'll delete the lot, Joomla, Database and SQL user. Then make a fresh V1.6 install.

Any thoughts? (Quick, before it's too late.)

Hey Dex! Thanks for the response. I await news of your migration.

I wrote an extensive report on my migration but lost the lot when I hit Submit. Maybe I hit the wrong button or maybe a system glitch.

Anyway, I'll see if this posts.

Can't embed a You Tube video in a post.

Changed to No Editor. Inserted the embed iframe code. Code disappears on clicking save.

Used exactly the same method in a 1.5 site and it's OK.

Also tried it in a 1.6 site that was a fresh 1.6 install. Same result as in the migrated site.

"I wonder why that is"

bummer. Thought you may have told me! LOL

Been looking for a freebie plugin but not too much available for 1.6 yet.

I see Andrew Eddie has video working on hid new 1.6 site alright, but it's not You Tube video.

Not free, 40 euro, but SO worth the money:
Plugin and/or module for playing vids from many sources in Flash and HTML5 (for iPad, iPhone)

"Youtube Link and Playlist (example, FAQ),Add thumbnail automatically for youtube video."

www.joomlarulez.com/example-jw-player-module.html
www.joomlarulez.com/example-jw-player-plugin.html

Actually it's free for non-commercial sites.

SUCH a good extension. Native for Joomla 1.5 and 1.6. Cross-browser/platform support and features are exceptional.

Thanks for that, Dex. I haven't got that working yet.

But I did find the answer to the original impasse. Quite simple when ya know how.

I expect it will work for Google Maps as well and for the local weather forecasts that I lost in the migration.

Laurie, I'm using Vzaar.com for my commercial video hosting and they supply their own player.

I'm helping Matias out a bit with the upgrade component so if you can take some time to explain what didn't work, in bite size pieces, I'll try and have a look. The 1.5 migrator didn't work perfectly out of the gate either

When I cut through all the things that went wrong because of inexperience, there seem to be three problems with the JUpgrade:

1) I lost the alias' in the articles and had to open and save each article to get the alias' back.

2) Something went wrong with the alias' for the categories. My memory is hazy but I think it was that numbers, about 6 digits, were added to the category alias'. I simply fixed them and saved.

3) There was one category that wouldn't let me change it's parent. I moved all it's articles to uncategorized, deleted the category, made a new category of the same name and put the articles back in. I could then change the parent.

A couple of other things:

1) JUpgrade changed the tmp folder to public_html/jupgrade/tmp. I can see why but it would have been great to know.

2) I lost the component xmap and the xml sitemap.

3) There seems to be no JAnalitcs module for 1.6. I lost Google analytics and have now put the code straight into the template.php. That's about the limit of my php ability.
