Am brand new to Joomla... and new to PHP (only part way through my first course).. and of course I cannot even install...

I followed the directions of the quick start manual and I end up with error messages, 404 not found... so I worked my way backwards, and tried to find phpadmin... again error message... so I tried the XAMP, which was sitting there comfortably telling me everything is working, but still the error message. What very obvious thing have I overlooked? Please help before I start swearing at my computer.... again...

PROBLEM SOLVED!

To all you others out there prone to making mistakes that should be obvious enough not to make!

With the PHP editor (PHPed), you can install a Technology Platform. This tech platform becomes the local host!

So you have to remove the editor, then you have to remove the tech platform. I am going to assume that this will cause the same sort of problem when you reinstall the PHP ed. mmm... install on different computer might be the only option!

Note to everyone, once you reinstall NuSphere PHPed, it quite happily uses the xamp setup!
