Hi all

Just wondering if there is any way in Joomla to have some articles link directly to external sites. Eg on www.crikey.com.au some articles link to content within the Crikey site, while others show a headline and short para but the headline links to an external site. I'm guessing the answer's probably 'no' because of the whole article/section/category setup of Joomla, but thought I'd ask, just in case.

Thanks
Katrina

there's no easy way to have a blog of articles, where one article in the blog is external and the rest are joomla/interal. You'd have to roll your own.

But you can have menus and articles link externally, or you can use feeds.

You might want also to have an article for which the intro is joomla and the 'read more' you link externally. You can cheat by
(a) making your own read more link inside the article (a class="readon"); or
(b) tweaking your SEF URLs by creating dummy menu entries - perhaps not so elegant.

Thanks Dex.

I realise I can write a paragraph of intro, then create a manual 'read more' which is an external link, but I could only do that by de-linking the article title, right? At the moment titles are linked (which I think people expect, especially on a magazine-type site), but of course the title is linked to an internal joomla article page. I guess there is no way to link the title of an article directly to an external site?

Yes I agree with Dex - you will have to do this manually. But it can be done and really it's only a miinor fiddle.

So for each article that you want linking externally - when you create the article - in params on the right - turn OFF show title and manuaully enter title. The trick here will be to match this to the other titles. - you maught have to add class="contentheading". (But best to fine tune this when you have final template in situ. (You will also have teh felxibility here to do what crikey does and use a different coloru title for external links)

Then as Dex said - just manually put a read more (like write read more) with the read on class and link it to the external site. I can probably create a drop down in eth editor - so you won't actully have to tinker with eth html when it's set up.

But best to most of the styling after template finalised - in teh mean time - try just makign teh articles that link to theexternal sites also within that ctagroy and turnign off show title and mnaually entering a titel and read more for now and see how it goes.
