Reset Joomla file/directory permissions ? 2 years, 9 months ago #1884

I've migrated a couple of sites in the past few days to new locations/servers and have noticed that despite using the same process I'm now getting issues with file and directory permissions ?

Is anyone aware of a script or any other method of returning the file/directory structure to the correct permission status ?

Thanks

How did you do the transfer?

Usually if you ftp the files up from say windows it will give the files and directories the correct permissions.

If you unzipped on the server, which is the far faster way, you are possibly at mercy of the server configuration.

Is it a shared server or your own?

Are they running phpsuexec and was your old server also running this?

Note your host should be able to tell you what is required, and possibly do it for you.

Otherwise it's about a 15-30 minute job for (me?) someone to log in, run a few commands. I've not scripted it up fully, I have two or three mini scripts that I use as I've had to do it before in the past. Happy to do it for you if you don't mind a bit of open heart surgery.

Actually once you know what the permissions are you can follow my post here

trac.symfony-project.org/wiki/SymfonyPHPsuexec

The actual values will be different but the commands are the same.

Have fun

Is this sorted?

Just thought I'd add that - it's often not the permsisions but ownerships that goes awry...

So joomla ( the website) is a user of the web directory.

If you want joomla (the website) to do stuff, joomla may need to "own" or be part of a group that "owns" the directory - the hostiing providers will need to sort this out if it's the case.

Sorry but that doesn't sound technically correct. Joomla itself isn't anything as far as the webserver is concerned. It's just a bunch of files that are run by Apache.

Joomla itself doesn't get to "own" anything.

No, it isn't. The files in the Joomla directory are just executed by Apache. That's it. The way the file permissions are handled is all part of the way the web server (including Apache) is configured. So you are correct when you state that it's best to ask your Hosting provider.

However one other thing the OP needs to check is whether setting up the ftp layer in the Joomla admin will get them out of trouble.

Given they haven't posted any details of the issue or error messages, I'd say they've sorted it. )

Permissions are assigned according to ownership - owner - group - others

The public - eg. - are "others" .

Joomla as in the website is generally given the same ownership rights as apache say (this is changeable though) , as you allude to - but what can happen is bthat teh site is installed with ownerhsip rights to root say - above apache.

Depends on your install - boutique isps and in house[ and I've seen it with shared servers also - ] - hosting organisations often prefer not to assign ownership to apache - so this is what I was referring to - sorry for no technical jargon - just translating it into terms I understand - obviuolsy you know more about this than me - but this is a common problem I see - in fact dealing with it today at and the soln for us is to change the ownernisp of the directory files or the user group in which Joomla / apache is in......... (hmm but still I may not have the correct jargon - do let me know - if this isn;t clearer)

Hi all

Thanks for the responses, the issue is now solved but I got help from the hosting company to reset the ownership on the files/dir's which was the issue.

FYI - I tried uploading the files via FTP & via cpanel and in both cases got the same problems. Funny it might be host specific but I have never had this issue when I use my own hosting.

Lesson learned though - try and get customers to use good hosting or at least a host that you, the developer, have a little control over.

Cheers
