Here's what I've found from Googling a few queries from Tim's excellent 1.6 presentation at last night's SJUG:

1. Rebuild
In Menus it allows you to fully rebuild the menu tree in the event is gets ‘out of whack’. By choosing a menu and hitting the Rebuild button, the system will recreate the menu and thus fix any corruptions.

In Categories the purpose of Rebuild is to (re)-organise the data in the tree structure

2. Discover
Extensions Extension Manager -> Discover searches the Joomla! installation directories for uninstalled extensions. Any uninstalled extensions found will be displayed in the extension listing. It caches the search results so they continue to be displayed on subsequent visits to this screen.

The screen shot at the above link shows that you can select what to install from the results.

3. Featured Articles
As Tim explained, the former ‘Frontpage’ articles option is renamed to ‘Featured’. This is more precise because a featured article may appear not only on the frontpage.

All demos I found of 1.6 showed only 1 menu link to Featured Articles. Also, this link to a publication revised in 2009 shows a single admin menu selection for Featured Articles.

...thanks Robert...doesnt sound too encouraging does it? I guess there'll be one for ACL too if we wait a bit.

I would like to hear exactly what gets out of whack.
