Sorry, Mate! Got logged out somehow and couldn't work out why I couldn't reply.

I've had a look at the blurb for this addon. Looks to me that it is yet another plugin that will extend or limit the search facility but won't give me multiple search boxes that I can assign to multiple modules.

It's a commercial one so I'm not keen to pay up, just to confirm what appears from the description.

Anyone know for sure?

Not 'for sure' but because it's a module and you can assign it to search a particular category, the general form would be that you can copy the module and for each copy of the module, you assign it a different category to search.

Then on your 'widgets' category page you could search just for widgets, and on your 'hubcaps' page you could search just for hubcaps.

does that help?

anyway, why not ask the developer in their support forum, if you're not sure?

I've had a look at their forum.

First up I found my exact question but no response.

Then I found the question again and the fellow gradually found his own answer, which was to use four different search bots.

But I want 50 different categories or sections individually searched.

He says that when he tried to use multiple versions of the one search bot, only one would function.

So, on the one hand I'm thinking it's not possible while on the other hand, surely it can't be all that difficult. Dunno.

oh pooh. Further research suggests you may be right. The modules seem to choose a search plugin, so you'd need a bunch of search plugins, not a bunch of modules.

This thing cant be that hard to do. But sadly I dont know off the bat what else to suggest.

No, I haven't asked the question but several others have. Either they got no response, the response was unhelpful or the response was that it can't be done.

Like you, I don't believe that it can be all that hard for someone who knows their stuff. It seems such a basic action that I'm surprised there aren't a dozen plugins commonly available. But there ya go!

Seems to me that what I need is a search module for every category and also a unique instance of the search_ex plugin for each module. The search_ex plugin can restrict search to a particular section, which would be good enough for my purpose.

But as things stand, there is nowhere to assign a particular search plugin to a particular search module. At least, not that I can see.

I've had some private conversation with JustLoveJoomla and she's hopeful she can come up with something to help me.

Thought it would be polite to update on the search endeavor.

JLJ has developed a suitable search module. Works like a ripper, straight out of the box, except for a minor, little problem which she hopes to get fixed in a few days.

Maybe JLJ will post when she's ready and maybe she'll make it available to others.

I'm also looking for an upgraded search component - one that allows the user to search within sections or categories that they choose. I just found this today which I'm going to test out:

You have to pay for it but it does look pretty good.

The plugin that JLJ made for me is working on six sections of my sig site, if you'd like to have a look.

I'm able, in the back end, to create a new module for each section and assign it to the appropriate menu.
