There seem to be a number of third party Joomla additions to help with SEO, many not free.

Are their any that people here would heartily recommend?

There are some you should get. Search in JED.

SEF title plugin for pages, lets you set the title.

Artio SEF - allows for meta, title and canonical, 404 redirect. I have found this better the sh404

RSSEO - a good tool for checking your websites SEO status and compare to other sites.

If you are super lazy, you can get the auto title, meta and tags generator plugin which will do all of this for you and pull the data it thinks is correct from the article on the page.

Be sure get breadcrumbs on your website as well!

I'm a fan of artio & the SEF patch (joomlatwork) too!

I looked up Artio again - clicked on BUY got www.artio.net/?option=com_virtuemart&...id=97%20&lang=en - oops at least their 404 page worked but that link didn't look too SEF to me.
