Rightly or wrongly, I have purchased a third party template from a company called Joomljet. They do not look like your normal Joomla style which attracted me to them.

Anyways I bought this one: www.joomlajet.com/preview/jj57/

I was sent the template and installed it without any probs but I am having hassles trying to edit it. I can't seem to find how to even edit the frontpage. I have added a new article and nominated to have it displayed on the frontpage but it fails to show up.

One thing I noticed was that there was no param.ini file included so i copied one from another template.

I have emailed the company a number of times but they have not replied. I have also the posted the questions on their forum but again nothing.

The template is module based and I have not used that setup before but surely it can't be that hard. Is it likely that I am missing a file or (more than likely) I am doing something wrong.

There was no instructions included with the purchase although it does have the template "instructions" here (template 57): www.joomlajet.com/joomla-templates-instructions-51-70

Here is the live site on my server: www.evolvewebservices.com.au/joomlanew/

The site on my server shows no menu items and the layout is completely different to the site you see on their site. All the menu items are published on my setup so I am not sure what is going on there.....

I just want to update my site with something more professional than what I have at the moment....

I know that someone here will help me (more than likely JLJ), and as such this forum is a victim of its own helpfulness. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

Cheers,

John

Hi John

Not all templates have a param.ini file - if you look at the templatedetails.xml file - it will show you what files and folders were included in the template.

re menu - go to module manager and make sure you have a menu published in the top user position

Thanks JLJ, I am slowly getting there...I managed to get the menu items to show on the top menu as well as the main menu. I am a little puzzled though as the main menu is in the middle of the screen.....

I thought that by buying a template would save me a bit of time but it seems not to be the case....

"I am a little puzzled though as the main menu is in the middle of the screen....."
- it looks lie you have the 3 modules published in the top position - top menu, newslfash and main menu

Thank you very much. I have taken the menus out as I will put them on the top image like the template example....

Now this is going to be really stupid question but I have added a menu item called Hosting. I have put some text in the editor, it is published, I have created a new section and category just like I would have done in version 1.0. I have also requested it get shown on the frontpage but cannot view it anywhere....(as in the text I added)

For that matter, how do i edit the frontpage? A stupid question I know....

Looks like this template does not allow you to publish content on the home page but only modules. I bought a template like this recently which is exactly what I was looking for at the time. The template writer has just stripped out the ability to publish an article on the front page.

If you put /?tp=1 at the end of your URL, e.g. http://www.joomlajet.com/preview/jj57/?tp=1 you'll see that the home page is made up of module spaces only - no content area.

You could possibly make another page your home page or you could publish the content you want on your home page into a custom HTML module into position header or User5 maybe (these both sit directly under the main menu module)

It is all starting to make a little sense. I did have the company get back to me stating that it was all very easy....well not to me it ain't but it IS starting to click....

I have created a few new modules and they are showing up on the site...that is good yes????

So a quick question with the modules side of things....

If I create a footer module, it will show the Joomla copyright information. Now just say I want to edit that information to show some other text, is this possible?

To edit a module that is included with the template, can i do that? Is it best to use the Custom HTML module for any text I wish to add?

I will need to delve a lot more into the Joomla learning curve but a couple of hints of the things you guys approach this type of setup would be tops.

Thanks once again.....

JL

PS - Have a quick squiz at the site for a better idea of where I am at....

PPS - That is a TOP tip Jen about the ?tp=1 very helpful...

Kind of getting the hang of it....a few questions though...

The menu in the the top in the black bar, how do I get that working as in having the menu links contained in that bar like the live site?

www.joomlajet.com/preview/jj57/

How do I adjust the front page so that I can just have the whole width of it for text or anything else? Currently it has 2 modules in the top 2 positions. I would like to know how to just have one module that takes up the whole space.

I am kind of getting the hang of it via trial and error but any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

There is a problem with IE7 not showing the newsflash items up the top but FF does. Any clues as to what that could be?

Thanks for your help,

John

I think you'll have to put the menu at the "top" menu position to make it be in the back area.

The two modules at the top - do you mean below the menu? If you've tried just turning one off and the one remaining doesn't take up the whole space, then I think you'll have to edit the index to remove the module you don't want (but then it won't be available anymore).

Sorry, don't have IE7 but it'll be something in the CSS (it's always something in the CSS with IE).

Sue, thanks for the reply. I took out the module in the index.php but the text on the right does not move to the left. I have had a look around but can't seem to find how to adjust the width of the module. Any clues on where I might look? If it is the sql portion then I will have no idea.

As for the menu, I have yet to try that.

I just wish the dudes that sold me the template would be a little more helpful. i get hardly anything back from them.

With a template, is it best to buy one with tables or module based? I have edited a couple with the tables and I seem to know what I am doing by hit and miss.....

Might be worth me ditching this one and buying another but it is a good layout.

Hmm, tricky. I'm not sure how this is working. It's hard to tell without actually playing with it, if you know what I mean...if you take out the image, where does the text go?

Personally, I belong to a template club, probably the biggest one, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. The templates are high quality and the support (which is very, if not most, important) is brilliant. For me, it's not so much how they're put together, but how much fiddling about "under the bonnet" I have to do to get something working. If I have to take hours modifying a theme, I may as well have built it myself (which is a horrid thought because I have zero artistic sense).

If I take the image out the text stays on the right. If the module is not activated, then the same. Took out the module position and still the same.

Care to share the company you use? You can always send me a PM if you dont want to post it here.

Thanks

Sent you a pm (email, whatever).

Have you tried turning off all the modules and then activating them one at a time to find out what goes where? Sort of a process of elimination.

Hi John

I don't necessarily think there is a problem with this template - so don't rush out and buy a new one just yet.

Turn off the news flash module - or move it to another position to get your menu in the correct place (as long as it is assigned top), as Sue says.

To see if the left hand modules collapse - unpublish all modules in header and user 6 position and view your test page - if it still doesn't collapse - turn off all modules.

Alsowhen you go to template manager - does this template - have 2 versions - you may have to assign accordingly

Sue, thanks for that I will check them out for future templates.

JLJ, I can tell you that there are 2 versions of the template that was supplied- one is called joomlajet57 and the other is joomlajet57a. In the template manager though there is only one template I can choose (backend of joomla I mean)

I am not sure how to assign them if there is only the one.... i will try the other suggestions when I get a chance.

Thanks SO much for the assistance thus far.

OK, I think I am nearly there....I turned off the newsflash items as suggested and the menu items moved up to the top bar. YAHOO!!!

i turned off all modules and that did not make a difference....

I adjusted the CSS in index.php and managed to have the content displayed on the one page. However, if you look at the page, the user modules below have a green line between the top 2 module positions and the bottom 2. Prior to me touching the css, it had a faint green line through the top and bottom sections.

Is there a setting that I am missing so that the internal window does not show scroll bars - for the top to bottom and the left to right....

if I can sort out the green line and the scroll bars, i reckon i would be good to go....

Cheers,

JL

Certainly closer. I don't get a green line but I do get horizontal and vertical scroll bars on the content area (FF3 on a Macbook).

Sue,

below the main current content area the is a green line and then some more white space which is where a couple of other modules are postioned. You dont see that on your Mac?

Oh yeah, I get what you mean by the green line now.

Do you use Firefox? I find it, in combination with Firebug, magic. I don't know how I ever did Joomla sites (or any other sites) without it.
Edited to add: it's brilliant for diagnosing all these nasty little complications. I've also added a screen cap.

I do have Firebug but I am a little lost as to how is helps with Joomla. I know it is excellent with HTML site but with the Joomla I find it a little confusing because everything within Joomla is not really page orientated. Does that make sense?
