Okay.

I happened to say I wanted to use open source and a content management system of my choice.

8 months it took for the university to give us a server, they put redhat enterprise on it, and now they say, go for it.

mmm. I am a designer, learning development (basic stuff like PHP), picking up Joomla, and now... *drum roll* da ta da! apparently I am IT.

Question, from all the reading.. I assume that somehow I put something like cpanel (opensource Webmin or Virtualmin which is like way cheap) and from there install Joomla.... assuming that the Virtualmin will install apache, php and so on?

I am assuming there are lots of steps inbetween, and any help for any people that understand Linux, and setting up servers (mmm.... now security is going to be fun...) would be muchos appreciated. Hell, I would even pay someone in Sydney for a one on one "there there dear its not so hard..."

anyone?

Hi Kali

Assuming you already have set up the web server - you don't need cpanel - just install Joomla directly onto linux server. If you are hosting your site remotely - you will need to ftp to the isp's server.

If you get stuck , contact me and I can put you in touch with a leading Sydney IT team au fait with networking and Joomla installation - you should be abale to find info on installation online though.

Hey Kali

Yep, that's throwing you in the deep end alright. I'm sure you've already Googled the Red Hat wisdom on setting up LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) but perhaps a good resource for you also is the Sydney PHP user group www.sydphp.org? They have a forum.

Otherwise, I know there are people in this group who have this expertise and perhaps I can contact them for you, if you're getting stuck and they are not responding here?

thanks.

I have already resolved to write something on from designer to developer to IT for idiots.

I believe that I will need to find some people on hand while I struggle through this. I could just pay people to do it for me, but then I will never learn and it would defeat the purpose somewhat. So I will probably just end up paying people to tell me where I have gone wrong. So any name dropping would be invaluable. Prefer individuals not companies, just someone I can throw a few bucks at for helping now and then when I get stuck.

As for installing Joomla directly onto the server, what if there is more than one web site running off that server that all use Joomla?

Anyway, was curious if there was anyone out there who have "been there done that".

By the way, if anyone else has just been learning linux, found this site which has entire books and manuals that help (providing of course you can find somewhere else that clues you into the jargon)

its http://www.linuxinet.com/

just make sure you can handle huge downloads, because some of the pdfs are huge tomes.

You can run more than one instance of Joomla - just pop new ones in their own directory. They can also share one database, by giving each instance a different prefix for Joomla tables (the standard is 'jos_') . But I wouldn't necessarily recommend sharing as the DB could get big and conflicts in database management and Joomla upgrades may occur between teams/instances.

I'll see if I can dob a few people in to help you. Could I email them to you?
