G'day there!

I can't get the search box working on a Joomla site.

Upon searching, it takes a few seconds and then reverts to the same page.

Funny thing: during my fiddling, it worked correctly two times, with two and three subsequent, correct searches, but then wouldn't work.

1) I've checked out the module and plugins in the backend and can't see anything disabled.

2) Deleted and replaced the relevant module and plugin folders from a new download.

2a) Overwritten all files and folders (except for installation and robots.txt) from a fresh download.

3) Upgraded from V15 to 16 to 17.

4) Upgraded the server from php 4 4.9 to php 5.2.3.

5) Tried it in FF and IE.

6) Changed templates.

7) Changed positions.

8) I have a vague memory of finding a file or folder set to 444 but can't remember what it was. Anyway, I've replaced all the files since then.

I'd be grateful for some direction in where to look next. Note: I'm php illiterate.

Thanks,
Laurie.

the search should be searching within your database so folder permissions php versions joomla versions should effect it.

I actually can't think of what it might be off the top of my head.

If you're looking at the search component from the front end it should just work.
The only limitation is your imagination

Thanks for the reply buipy001.

I think there is a typo there. I think you meant should not effect it. Correct?

As far as I can see, the only files/folders that I haven't replaced from a fresh download are:

installation folder
configuration.php
robots.txt
.htaccess

Any thoughts, anyone?

HI Laurie - have you got a url. I have seen this before - I can't recall exactly what the solution was - other possibilities = plugins not enabled (I think you say you have done that) - what addons are you using are you using any addons that have their own search plugin, for example.

Please create a menu link to teh search component adn test via that page - let's try and figure out at what level teh search isn't working - ie is it the module component or plugin (PS - I'm assumign this isn't teh search component I made for you)

Thanks JLJ.

1) This is a different site with standard search.

2) No extra add-ons.

Url is www.southimage.net/

I'll make the link to the search box and get back to you.

Thanks,
Laurie.

OK.

I've created a search link under the Related Sites menu heading. Called it Test Search.

Works like a charm!

I guess that means that it's the module that's not functioning.

Since posting this morning, I've overwritten the 1.5.17 installation with freshly downloaded copies of the module and plugins folders from 1.5.17 full pack. Didn't help.

Thanks.

Re:Troubleshoot Search 2 years ago #2758

ok try this - go to extensions / search module - params - turn cahcing OFF (right hand params) - try with both set item id - set to nothing (leave blank) then ALSO try with itemID set to eth test search menu item number (you could also try with and witout button)

If all this fails - reinstall search module

Re:Troubleshoot Search 2 years ago #2761

Laurie - it may be your RSS feeds!!

Hmm.. it seems to be workign from teh deeper pages - like it works here:www.southimage.net/snowy-mountains/13-kosciuszko-snow

Just need to figure out what is different abotu those pages! - I'm thinking it's some code somewhere...

or is there a module that is NOT on those pages..?

Does this mean turn off all plugins?

I only have the standard plugins and modules. No third party add-ons.

I've tried everything you've suggested except for turning off a couple of the standard plugins.

The article pages are OK. It's the:

Category Blog Layout
Article Layout
Xmap (html sitemap)
Standard Contact Layout

that don't work.

I can't find any modules unique to the pages that don't work. I've turned off the RSS.

This site is the only one that was a cPanel install. For all my other Joomla sites I've used the installer. Surely cPanel isn't the source of the problem? If the configuration file was wrong, the whole thing wouldn't work?

Any use deleting all the files and doing a new install using the installer?

Re:Troubleshoot Search 2 years ago #2765

OK well - tricky - if you have reinstalled / reuploaded the search module & tested with all addons on adn off - I'm thinking it's time to view the error log - are you able to do that?

In addition, I"m also wondering if it's something in the menu..... like the active menu item is causing the problem - what happens if you create a link to an article - does it work on that page when accessed through teh menu?

Thanks for getting back JLJ.

I'd about given up and have created a substitute way of doing things.

I've created a menu called Search Functions with links to the Google Custom Search article page and to the second search page.

However, I'll give your suggestion a go. I really would like to have it working correctly. Will get back to you.

Yes, I have viewed the error log. Only one entry from some non existent link from a WP blog that I set up for my daughter.

I can't see that the WP blogs in sub folders of the domain should cause a conflict.

Thanks,
Laurie.

Well JLJ, I believe you're on to it!

1) I've created a new search module at the bottom of the left sidebar called Test Search Box.

2) New link in Supplementary Menu called Test Link. This leads to an article that gave correct search before.

3) Searching in the box on this article page doesn't work.

What now?

Thanks.
