Hi All,

This is a bit of an old chesnut yet I still have issues trying to get contact forms to send emails to an email address located on the same domain as the website, specifically when that email is hosted by Google ?

I wonder if anyone really has the problem licked and would be kind enough to share how they got it working ?

A quick summary of the situation.

1. Email is hosted "externally" by Google using their Google Apps service.
2. Contact forms AiContactSafe and QContacts have been tested
3. Global Configuration > Mail Settings have been set to every possible permutation that I can figure out inc SMTP authentication which nevers seems to work

So in summary if anyone has been able to get emails sent successfully from a contact form to a Google hosted email address on the same domain as the website I'd love to know how you did it

Thanks

You need to change the DNS settings on the domain to let it know that you have a remote mail server.

right now it is most likely set to

priority 0 and yourdomainname.com

That one should be removed from the DNS entry.

Your Google Apps MX entries should follow after that.

Thanks buipy001 however "normal" email inbound & outbound is working perfectly in all cases.

All domains have the correct MX entries.

The only problems are when a vistor to the website tries to send email via a Contact Form - such a AiContact Safe and QContacts and I would hazzard a guess the default contact from within Joomla too.

So its a specific issue to the Joomla site rather than a generic can't receive email issue.

Hey Martin

I still think it is server related.

For domain accounts that we set up on our hosting environment that have external mail server we have to specify in Web Host Manager that the mail server is remote. When we do that then the site will start accepting mail that originates from itself. e.g. own domain.

Last time we had this issue was when we setup a server for a client and forgot to modify this setting in the configuration of the Cpanel account.

All mail got lost and not good. :blackhole from online forms and contact forms that were on the website or code the generates emails and sends to the self domain.

Worth a check anyway.

If thats not it then I'd love to know what it is.

Peter

Hi Peter

Thanks for the clue .. I was really hoping that was going to be the solution - esp when I noticed that both of the domains in question had the Cpanel DNS zone info set as "Automatically Detect Configuration: Local" set when in fact it should have been remote !

I've now correctly set the email routing to Remote and retested - no luck

If I set the STMP options then I keep getting a "SMTP Error! Data not accepted." error - however I can login into Google Apps using the same credentials ..

So I'm stumped at the moment ...

Ok go figure ..

If I change the Global Configuration > Mail Settings back to PHP Mail funtion and remove all the SMTP stuff it now works ?? WTF ..

I suspect what fixed it was the DNS zone change to "Automatically Detect Configuration: Remote" so - thanks Peter

I'm off for a beer

Oh yes that's right, this is what you need to change to use the php mail function.

Some components in Joomla don't use smtp and will only use the php mail function from what I've seen.
