Hi Everyone,
I'm about to embark on using K2 for the very first time and have to say I am excited to be doing so!

I just typed K2 into the extensions directory to see what's available and was gob-smacked at the number in there (226 so far...).

Based on that, does anyone have a list of 'must have' K2 extensions that they use regularly? I guess in particular I'm looking for ones that extend the search functionality at this stage but am happy to hear what everyone loves to use in general to make sites use K2 to their best abilities.

Cheers,
Jen

G'day Jen,

Congratulations on taking the big step... LOL

Most important of all is the JCE extension that allows you to select internal links from K2 content. It's filename is jce_advlink_k2100.zip.

Apart from that, I have used the same old extensions I always use as base. sh404SEF works well with K2, as does Xmap. You will need to install All Videos from Joomla Works as it's the best for videos I find and also Simple Image Gallery to use the Gallery extension in the K2 Items. This is available from Joomlaworks. There is also a slideshow extension you might like to check out called Land of Slideshows K2. There is also a Google Maps extension for K2 with the file name plg_k2maps_V11.zip.

I'm sure if you search for the filenames I've given you that they will turn up in Google with the suppliers.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to sing out and I will give you whatever assistance I can.

Cheers....

One of the best things I love about k2 is the ability to organize content by different taxonomy, namely categories, tags, author types and more.

I highly recommend Aida news module for k2 and k2 content tags module. These give you so much flexibility on how you can display content in module around the website.

I might release a few other ones that we made here, one that pull in videos thumbnails and allows displaying of the screen shots of videos from YouTube just by adding in the ID into the videos tab when using all videos.

I am really loving working with K2 so far (still on my first site but going live soon!). As an update to this thread, so far the extensions I have used are:

When I started out I put some content into the default Joomla content area because I knew I wanted to use some modules that worked only with Joomla and didn't have the knowledge of K2 modules that could do similar things. I know this is not the perfect solution and really, K2 should be used for all content on the site. I am now seeing why as my search results page gives the user too many options to search 'only K2' or 'other group' which the average user will have no idea what that means.

One particular module I use on nearly all of my sites is the JoomlaWorks Ultimate Content Display (UCD) to simply display rotating content items from a particular category or section. I have found this useful in so many sites. However I cannot for the life of me find a K2 extension that will rotate K2 items in a simple way like JW UCD. Has anyone come across something like this or can recommend their favourite extension for rotating K2 items in general?

An update to this post. I have spent quite a few hours trawling for an extension to match JW UCD for K2 but ended up using RokStories and modified a particular style to do what I want:

I used RokStories Style 6 (Scroller) and changed line 45 in the layout.php for that style to get rid of the image, and changed line 99 in the rokstories.css for the width setting.

I have RokStories used on the same page using a different layout type for a different category and there are no conflicts either (so far) so that's good.

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has used the Admin Menu K2 extension for the backend administration of any of their sites and how have they found it? The few reviews on the JED are mixed so I'm a little hesitant to use it.

As I have no content in the old Joomla 'content' structure, I like the idea of this extension removing it from the backend menu so my client doesn't get confused when adding new K2 content in the future.

Thanks,
Jen

You should already have that menu in graphical form on your site if you have installed K2 Jen. I note one of the people who gave it a poor review was Brian Tieman so I would certainly be noting his comments.

Thanks Ric. I have disabled the default Joomla icons so it is just the K2 icons showing when you go to the Site Control Panel but it still leaves me to explain to the client they should not go to Content drop down menu from the top main menu options in the backend. I guess its just 'how it is' for the time being!

Cheers,
Jen

Now I'm with you.

What I do is make sure that all Sections and Categories plus all articles are deleted from the site. Then if a client goes there they are faced with blankness.. LOL.

If you really have a dumb one..... add and article entitled "What The Hell Are You Doing In This Area Instead of K2". That should be striking enough don't you think?

Hey K2'ers,

I posted a question in the Troubleshooting section of this forum but have had no replies. Before I go ahead and outsource this problem, I was just wondering if you've had experience with it before?

joomla.org.au/forum/joomlaoz-help-and-tr...l-button-not-working

Also, does anyone know how to remove the time stamp on the article created and modified date lines? I don't think its necessary to know the time when an article was published and nor does the client! I wish K2 had the option to choose only to show the date...

Cheers,
Jen

Hi Peter, Just wondering if you can shed some light on how you put K2 menu items under the 'Content' Menu in the backend? Would love to implement this but am not sure how to go about it.
Cheers, Jen

Hey Jen,

For ease of implementing it I'd recommend that module extension made by Andrew Eddie that was mentioned by nikunj
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/adminis...dmin-navigation/8517

The one that I showed before was a modified core file.

I'd have to look up which file it is but I have a customised admin area for the backend of my Joomla websites.

Everything is laid out and suppose to be improved for usability without changing the template too much for users that are already familiar with Joomla.

email me and I'll send you the exact file.

Thanks Nikunj and Peter. I'll try out Andrew's extension and see how I go before asking for the file from you Peter!

Cheers,
Jen
