Hi all,

Just starting down the road of K2 and have come across a problem right off the bat - fills you with confidence eh !

I'm trying to create a new (and first) category and get the following error -

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_internal_encoding() in /xxxx/xxxx/public_html/administrator/components/com_k2/tables/k2category.php on line 49

The GetK2 site has a few explainations however all seem to involve re running Easy Apache to get multibyte functions enabled.

This "fundamental" seems a major stumbling block for such a popular component esp when so many people don't have access to customising their Apache or PHP settings...

Anyone know a work around ?

Never seen this on all the sites I have put together Martin. I'll have a look at the K2 forums later about it, but in the meantime, perhaps a reinstall may???? fix it????

Always worth a try I've found.

Thanks Ric,

Appreciate the response. I tried the reinstall option no joy, same result. I have also recently installed a JB template which came with K2 pre-installed and that had the same issue.

I bit the bullet and recomplied PHP with the multibyte option enabled and it works .. fancy that

Anyway I still think that seems like a larger than average requirement to get a component working. After all not everyone needs multibyte languages on their websites.

Oh well ...

It's your host that is the issue not K2 - seems to be some work arounds (like hack the core) but the most sensible is to enable the library (mbstring) on your host (get them to do it).

did you see code.google.com/p/joomlaworks/issues/detail?id=43

I run my own host and have all the tweaks running to make for happy Joomla sites and have never had a K2 issue - opposite really - if has more than a few pages I always installed it.

Thanks Ian

Yes I did see that post which was one of the reasons why I recomplied PHP to include the mb options.

All working now thanks.
