DISCUSS: Bar code scanning - using a barcode tied into Joomla

Got a Joomla problem? Post as much detail about it as you can here to see if you can get a solution.

Where possible, include URL for the site or page having issues, what version of Joomla you're using, what type of server (eg Cpanel, WAMP, IIS), what components may be installed, and specific error messages you're encountering.

If you think your problem is particularly obscure, you might be better posting it to the forums at joomla.org as there's thousands more people to help you.

My clients are getting more and more adventurous every day.

Currently they have a registration system set up using RSForm!Pro, but that may end up going into Fabrik to incorporate the added functionality needed for this request. The event is in a secured area, so identification is critical, and registration will be mandatory.

Once the customers have registered for the event, they then show up at the event, and will have one of the following scenarios:
  • Registration print out will have a barcode on it - it's then scanned, and the system marks that record as 'in attendance'. A wristband is then issued to the person before they proceed through the gates.
  • Company will issue a wrist band with a barcode printed on it prior to the event. This is then scanned at the gate and will identify the person as 'in attendance'.

So at the moment, all the data management can be done in Joomla using various existing components.

Previously where I've seen barcode scanning in operation, it's basically only speeding up data entry - so it reads the code and then converts it to a string on the screen, which with the right software can then fill out the form value and submit it. AJAX calls can then complete the rest, so it's: Scan, Retrieve record, mark as in attendance, wait for the next scan.

  • Has anyone used any Joomla bar code extensions to generate their own barcodes so far?
  • Has anyone used any bar code PHP code in a joomla site (rather than an extension) to generate a code?
  • Has anyone used bar code scanners tied to a web interface to then fill out a form like mentioned above?

Thanks Viki. Ended up figuring out a method using a barcode image generator php script.

Will post a link to the howto blog here when I eventually write it.
