I came across a very interesting article today on the Market Samurai blog which has been attributed to Leslie Rohde, an excellent SEO specialist.

With many Joomla templates now having galleries at the top of the page that link to internal pages, this tip is even more relevant. Apparently Google takes note of the first link on a page, but if you have a contextual link in the text, which theoretically is better for SEO, Google ignores the contextual link. Given Leslie Rohde's credentials, I would well imagine this has been well tested.
