ok, we need two user groups on our 1.6 site. We are using the defauld "Registered" group and we have set up a new group ("VIP") that has the same settings as the Registered group. The difference is that each group will see different menu items and modules.

We have the Registered group working with Public as the parent but when 'VIP' which has the Registered group as its parent logs in they see both their own menus and modules plus those for the Registered group.

We have tried setting Public as the parent for VIP group to replicate the Registered group but when we do this the VIP users can not log in at all.

I think this is a fairly simple request and the only reason we upgraded to 1.6 is because of its apparent flexibility for user groups but if it cant handle this task I think we will regret upgrading.

That is how it ought to work, on inheritance from the parent group, but dont worry, you can make it work for you too.

From the sound of it, you should not be assigning permissions at the Registered Group level. Dont use this group for access restrictions, rather make two child groups ('Members' and 'VIP Members', or whatever) of Registered group and assign menu and module access control to each of the two child groups.

That way everyone can log in and no-one will need to see stuff that should be restricted to the other group.
