We will be meeting on the 4th Wednesday as usual (next Wednesday, 25th May) here.

Our major subject for discussion will be K2. We've tried this once before with limited success. If you've had experience with K2, please let me know ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and (of course) come along to the meeting.

See you there!

One of Australia's most prominent Joomla developers, Norm Douglas, will be coming to our meeting this Wednesday, 25th May.

As Norm says:-
"I've been doing lots of cool things lately with membership sites, super slick blogs, K2 templating, templating with ZenGrid and other stuff."

He'll be telling us more this Wednseday, 6:30pm. Come along and join us. All welcome.

I've been getting some use out of K2 over the past few weeks and I'm starting to look at new projects through the K2 lens (which seems to be very good)

Thanks Pete for arranging and Norm for travelling up to the big smoke

******************** EEEEEEK! ********************************
Stop Press: I've just discovered that, unfortunately, we won't be able to get in to the meeting room tonight.
Instead we'll go to the Fisherman's Bakery in Faraday St towards Lygon St from the Uni on the south (right) side.

Re: MJUG May Meeting - Next Wednesday, 25th May 12 months ago #4254

Hi gents,

Great to meet you all last night. Anthony and I have been doing some work with K2 and Sherper today, and run into a little snag which we're hoping some of you might be able to help out with?

We've been using the following function to call our extra fields into a K2 template:

<?php echo $this->item->extra_fields[1]->value; ?>

But this doesn't appear to work for items created in Sherper. Is there a different function we should be using, or is it something to do with the settings/parameters inside K2/Sherper?

Cheers,

Chris

Hi all,

Ric apologies for not having you in on the skype for our meeting on Wed Night. As you heard we ended up down at a local cafe and my mobile internet wasnt working as well as I would have hoped, so was unable to organise getting you in on skype.

So I am just posting up my meeting notes, I will leave out double ups with what pete has. It will probably sound a bit random here too as I am looking back over my scribbles....

***Disclaimer - I may get bits of info confused or wrong, if so please just send in the correction.

So we discussed: (in no particular order below)

JCE EDITOR:
Provides the ability to create image folder paths for each user.

K2:
When you want to have a non registered member view the info for a registered article up to the read more link and then have to register to see more you do the following.
Menu item > show unauthorised links.
this will allow them to see registered article but will take them to the log in page to see the whole thing.

USING COOL FONTS:
Jsifr pro
Google Fonts
Type kit
These were all discussed and offer different ways to have unusual fonts in your site withour using flash. They are all readable by google.I believe that Norm said the Jsifr offered the ability to actually give it your particular font and it would use this were requested. (As seen on one of the Giant Cycles sites)

K2:
Norm also changed the K2 icon in the admin panel and renamed it to John Smith Admin etc.
This was to make it really straight forward for the client. The thinking being, "make icon and name mean something to client..."

AUTHOR ALIAS:
Using the author alias (a little used field) in articles to be able to set up an easy to use class to switch on and off a background image that showed an event as open or closed. (Someone with more idea than me can discuss this further)

BANNERS:
Gavick Newsshow pro

Joomla bamaboo - micro blog

SHERPA:
We requested something that would give us more control with additional "extra fields" in K2.
This component was suggested and looks to have some great funtionality. Still new for us and we are trying to get the fields to show correctly (see Chris's post)

KA SOCIAL SHARE:

Nice little facebook and twitter links

MEMBER SITES:
Using a combo of AEC and OSE membership

ACCORDIAN MENU:
offlajn.com

JFUSION:
This was a bit over my head, but norms thinks its great. So would be worth a look.
He also spoke about using a combo of:
Art of User and Content Manager to get 1.6 Access level styled control

User Admin:
Norm also suggested going into admin back end and unpublishing the components so that the "Admin" level users wont see extra stuff that they dont need to use. The components still work, and when youneed to edit them as a Super Admin, you just publish while you are working on them.

Thats about it from me...

Thanks Norm for a great lot of info....

Cheers,

ant S...

I'm maintaining the list of links from last meeting. I've made a couple of changes so far.

Does anyone have links for these topics discussed at the last meeting?
- CSS for K2;
- PCDPR;
- QFonts (spelling?);
- Image Map.

Some things in life just cannot be helped. Great shame about the meeting.

Anyway... here is the link for CSS for K2 Pete....

www.jiliko.net/documentations/itemlist/category/16-css-4-k2

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere but you will need Simple Image Gallery plugin to get the Image Galleries to work in K2. I have the Pro version, and there is some mention in Forums that it won't work with the free version of SIG. Link to both versions is:-

This explains how to add an image map plugin to joomla editors, allowing you to create maps online.
