While following Brian Teeman I came across one of his brilliant videos. Everyone can benefit from looking at Hidden Joomla Secrets. While specifically 1.7 the same applies to 2.5 to be released next week.

Grab a coffee and spend the time to watch his video presentation and you will get an insight into the workings and setup of Joomla 1.7 (2.5). I am sure it will save you time and effort as you move forwards with Joomla.
