Hi all,

I am putting together a quote for a site that has the following requirements.
I am hoping the jomsocial will cover most of this (but haven't used the component as yet) so need to get anyones feed back if it will do the trick and also if it will need any mods. Also if there are any other recommendations that can be made.

here goes…

Users are:

Sports Competitors - appx 5000 members
Event Organisers - appx 100 members
Sports Clubs - appx 800 organisations
Fans - Unsure...

All users will need to pay before being directed to the area to create a profile.

sports competitors
They will have a list of standard details that will need to be added for each new member eg:

Location
sport type
weight
wins
losses.. etc

Sports Clubs
may have multiple competitors in their organisation they will have branding for their members and additional details for the organisation that are accessible.

Event Organisers (will be invisible to other users)
will need to be able to search this info to match up the sports members to create competitions between suitably matched opponents.
eg: search for the following:

sports category: Type A
Location: Victoria
Weight: 60 - 70 Kgs
etc….

This would bring up a narrowed down list each time a new keyword is used in the search.
So from show all, right down to categories specified.

Fans
will be able to join the site and search the sports competitor bas too and see statistics. They also need to be able to make up their wish list for any competitors to compete against each other. The competitor needs to be automatically notified if this has happened and these wish lists also need to be able to be joined in and voted on so that they may grow in popularity.
Event Organisers will then also be able to see this and potentially put on a sports event if it looks like the wish list is really popular.

These are some of the key things that need to happen on the site apart from all the usual stuff.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks again,

Anthony S.

Dunno about JomSocial, but this looks like CCK or custom development to me. For instance, your statement includes:

  • Several areas of uncertainty and assumptions. I don't think the requirements are specific and complete, so it would be difficult to scope the job.
  • At least four distinct categories of users, each with different functional requirements. JomSocial is only designed for two primary categories of users: admins and friends, so it doesn't fit the functional requirements.
  • Subscription/payment services: not a JomSocial speciality
  • Wish lists, with voting and event scheduling downstream: potentially significant and out of JomSocial scope.
  • Sports stats/reporting requirements: largely unknown and out of JomSocial scope.

I may be underestimating JomSocial in some of these points. But I think the requirements probably exceed JomSocial's capabilities, and may also be too much for any set of OOTB components without a fair bit of customising. I don't think the existing requirements and specs would support a firm quote.

Good luck,

Echoing Russell's word of caution, Ant . . .

Is it a social media site (in which case JomSocial seems to be the best that Joomla has to offer) or a blog site (K2?) or both?

My concern would be that there's a lot of customisation, to which I think you'll find JomSocial is very resistant. K2 is much more amenable to that.

Also the different levels of access (competitors, organisers, clubs, fans) is a challenge. And then I bet you've got vertical zones of access state, zone, age range, weight range etc. That'd need a real ACL like J1.6.

Maybe the real solution is outside the Joomla sphere.

For sport management have a look at JPodium and JoomSport. I am currently building a site using JoomSport to manage a soccer club and the competitions that it competes in. JPodium from memory is more suited to athletics and individual sports.
