My Reccomendation is to sign up to www.lynda.com, tits about $30 per month and you will be able to learn everything you need to get your teeth into joomla in that one month.
Its a video tutorial site.
Start with this and then get extra help via contacts made in MJUG.
Have you come to a meeting as yet? If not I would suggest this would be the best thing to do also.
Its a very friendly and helpful bunch of people.
