Attached here are the notes from my presentation at SJUG last night.
The migration is much easier than 1.0 -> 1.5
Happy sailing in 1.6!

Hi,

I thought I'd try the 1.6 upgrade on a simple website and struck the following "500 - An error has occurred Table 'robertfa_rocher.j16_categories' doesn't exist" problem:

matware.com.ar/forum/projects/jupgrade/5...select-a-id-etc.html

As per my Matware topic post, I'm going to try and rollback the upgrade and see what happens. At least the main website is preserved and still up!

Regards,
Robert

Found the problem: the version of MySql on my webserver, as documented in my Matware forum post: matware.com.ar/forum/projects/jupgrade/5...a-id-etc/page-2.html

As specified on Joomla.org, MySql must be v5.0.4+ for Joomla 1.6.x.

I've just emailed my hosters, requesting they upgrade MySql on the web server. Hopefully that won't be a problem ... otherwise I'm stuck with 1.5 until I move to a new hoster!

Regards,
Robert

Thankfully my hoster migrated my environment to a server running MySQL version 5.0.92-community-log and I re-ran the JUpgrade routine in this environment successfully.

Now to upgrade the template (with Artisteer!).

Robert

Good to hear.

Let us know how you do with Artisteer?

An update on my 1.6 upgrade: I successfully upgraded my consultancy website (www.rocher.com.au) to Joomla 1.6 after it was migrated to a new server with MySql v5.0.4+ (see problems above) ... BUT, I had a problem with the Adminstrator.

I got the login screen okay, but ended up with horrible "Fatal error: Call to a member function login() on a non-object" errors after entering the admin username/password.

I checked the configuration.php file as suggested by Dex at last night's SJUG. Yes, there were a couple of references to log files in the jupgrade folder, but the errors still occurred after updating them.

Then it occurred to me that as I'd copied the contents from the jUpgrade folders to the live folders, perhaps there was something "left over" from 1.5 in the Administration folder that shouldn't be there. So, I deleted the live Adminstration folder and re-copied Administration from the jUpgrade folder. It worked!

Now I'm wondering whether there are any other 1.5 "left overs" in other live folders

Regards,
Robert

Or ask Matias, at the jUpgrade forum. He's very helpful.

Hi Dex,

Yes, I Googled the message and trawled through a whole heap of topics but couldn't find a good match.

As it so happens, since my last post I found another problem with my upgrade where the TinyMCE Editor in the live Administrator wasn't working (content displayed as straight HTML and wouldn't save in Category descriptions and Articles) but was fine in the jUpgrade folder.

Again, I compared the live and jUpgrade folders and found "left overs" in the plugins folder in the live environment. So, I deleted it, re-copied plugins from the jUpgrade folder and all's fine (as far as I can tell!)

Rgds, Robert

Mmm I never overwrite. I always backup, delete then move. Eliminates a bit of risk.
So it's working now?

Yes, thanks, Dex, the site's working, but I will follow your advice and delete and move/copy the 1.6 files and folders from jUpgrade to the live environment.
