As a complete newcomer to Joomla I have installed MAMP and Joomla and made some progress in learning the basics.
From what I can see of my Joomla setup I am missing some components in the editor such as the table creator and the font menus. (see screengrab)
Im pretty sure I did the installation correctly, can anyone assist...

Try this (forgive crap typing)
- login to yorusite.com/adminsitrator
- go to extensions (top) choose plugin manager
- find "editor tiny mce...
- under funtionality (on left) choose EXTENDED
- click APPLY
