Gday all,

My name is Rob, and i was so glad to come across a fairly "local" community for Joomla.

I have been racking my head (as my icon indicates), trying to learn the artful way of Joomla and creating templates.

I feel comfortable manipulating my way through the Admin side of it, adding components, news etc... , but was wondering if any of you could recommend a site/program/forum that would make life a bit easier.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Rob

Hi Rob

Welcome aboard - sorry was off yesterday, missed your post.

Feel free to post your specific questions here, or use forum.joomla.org. Or both. And you can attend your local Joomla user group mtg, if there is one. The Sydney one is tonight - you can see the rest on the home page.

Sounds like you are making good progress.

Have looked at a couple of applications (Media65,Barrie North) for template design, and have found them to be a little bit daunting at times. I was wondering if there is any other type of software/group that would make template designn easier, or am i hoping for too much ?

I have tried to sit through and read various tutorials, but i keep finding only small parts from each benefitting myself. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, i am located SE Victoria, and the closest User Group would be almost 2 hours travel each way. Unless of course someone was starting a SE Gippsland Group

Hi Rob

Um...The creation templates or translating them from plain HTML/CSS to Joomla templates is not all that simple, to be honest. The Compass Designs tutorial on the subject is definitely one of the better ones. When I train other web designers to make Joomla templates, it takes me at least a day and a half of workshops.

There are actually not that many people making templates. You can also get one of the really good quality templates and pull it apart for inspection. Joomlart free ones, for example - professional, standards compliant and and well featured without being over-complicated.

Shame you are so far from the Melbourne group.

I think perhaps look at tutorials online and/or post your specific questions here or on the forum.joomla.org

Good luck!
